The idli is a soft rice cake and popular throughout South India. They are usually two to three inches in diameter and are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. Idli is most often eaten at breakfast or as a snack and some eat it as meal. Idlis are usually served with various chutneys and sambar.
